ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads: Where Should Your Budget Go?

Last reviewed 25 August 2026.

The honest answer is that this is not yet a real choice for most advertisers. Google Search processes billions of queries daily. ChatGPT’s ad enabled tiers represent a fraction of that volume. If you are running a mature search programme, this is a test line item, not a reallocation.

That said, the comparison is worth understanding properly, because the two channels differ in ways that go well beyond scale.

Targeting: keywords versus context

Google Ads is built on keywords and audience signals. You bid on phrases, layer intent signals, and retarget people who have already interacted with you.

ChatGPT has none of that. Placement is contextual, decided from the topic of the live conversation and prior interactions rather than a query string or cookie profile. There is no keyword bidding and no retargeting in the conventional sense. This is a privacy first architecture, and it means the lever you pull is creative relevance to a subject rather than precision of match to a phrase.

Practical consequence: your Google keyword research does not transfer. Your understanding of what customers are actually confused about does.

Intent quality

This is where the AI channel has a genuine structural advantage. A Google searcher types three words. A ChatGPT user has often spent several turns describing their situation, receiving information, and narrowing their options before the sponsored card appears. They arrive at your ad qualified in a way search traffic rarely is.

Criteo has reported that referrals from AI assistants convert at roughly 1.5 times the rate of other channels. That is one vendor’s data on an immature channel, so treat it as directional rather than definitive, but the mechanism behind it is sound.

Cost

ChatGPT runs $3 to $5 per click. Google Search ranges from about $1 to over $50 depending on category. In competitive verticals such as insurance or legal, where Google clicks exceed $20, ChatGPT is cheaper per click, though note that legal and financial services are among the categories blocked from placement entirely.

On CPM ChatGPT is premium, with figures reported between $25 and $60 depending on buying route. On cost per acquisition the answer is unknown, because vertical benchmarks do not exist yet.

Measurement

Google gives you keyword level attribution and a mature conversion tracking stack. ChatGPT gives you neither. Influence frequently happens without a click, since the assistant can name a brand and shape a decision inside the conversation. This pushes you toward lift based measurement and incrementality testing rather than last click attribution.

If your organisation cannot make decisions without last click data, that is a real barrier to entry and worth acknowledging before you spend.

Where each one wins

Google wins on scale, on precision, on measurement maturity, and on any product requiring visual demonstration. It remains the default and should stay the majority of most budgets.

ChatGPT wins on intent quality, on cost relative to expensive search verticals, and on competitive thinness, since most advertisers are still waiting. It also wins on complex considered purchases that benefit from conversational explanation, which is precisely where search ads underperform.

How to split a budget

A reasonable posture for an eligible advertiser is a defined test allocation over a quarter, sized to reach confidence rather than to look busy, held separately from your search budget so the test does not get raided when search performance dips. Judge it on incremental acquisition, not on click through rate.
